There have been many responses after Saturday’s attack overseas. President Biden said this on Tuesday afternoon from the White House:
“Let us be clear: There is no place for hate in America. Not against Jews. Not against Muslims. What we reject is terrorism. We condemn its indiscriminate evil, just as we have always done.
That is what America stands for.”

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the problem of Intimate Partner Violence is huge. It is estimated that 41% of women and 26% of men will experience some type of domestic violence in their lifetime. Since the Violence Against Women Act was originally enacted in 1994, the rate of domestic violence has come down.
There are many violence prevention programs and resources available should you or someone you know need help. Click here for a list of federally available resources and find locally available resources here. We can all support programs that educate people about dating and domestic violence, effective communication and emotional management skills, and how to help someone who is in an abusive relationship.
The White House issued A Proclamation on National Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, 2023, and our Lake County leaders participated in several important outreach events throughout the county.
State Senator Adriane Johnson, State Representative Rita Mayfield, Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart, and State Representative Joyce Mason joined other community leaders to sign a proclamation recognizing Domestic Violence Prevention Month.
Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart (center) joined A Safe Place/Lake County Crisis Center for its annual candle-lighting ceremony to honor victims of domestic violence.
Senator Dick Durbin Shows Support for Striking UAW Workers
Above left, Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin showed his support for striking United Auto Workers (UAW) by joining them on the picket line at the Ford Assembly Plant in Chicago. This follows a visit Durbin made to the UAW picket line at General Motors in Bolingbrook (above right).
Senator Durbin said, “Labor movements like UAW helped build the middle class. Now, they’re using their power to help strengthen it for generations to come—and I am proud to stand alongside them.”
“For weeks, the men and women of UAW have stood shoulder to shoulder, united in their pursuit of fair wages, safe working conditions, and job security. They have endured long hours, harsh weather, and the uncertainty of what lies ahead, but they remain resolute in their commitment to a better future for themselves and their families.”
Senator Durbin not only championed the 2022 Illinois Workers’ Rights Amendment but more recently, along with Senator Tammy Duckworth helped introduce a bill to protect a worker’s right to organize.
It’s Petition Season
Many of you are already passing petitions, but Lake Dems can use more help. We have petitions for every Democratic candidate running throughout Lake County and we need your assistance.
Can you help get petition signatures to ensure that Democrats will appear on the General Primary ballot in March 2024? It may seem like it’s a long way off, but the deadline for submitting petitions is coming up. If you can help, contact us at info@lakedems.org.
