Help Lake County Democrats Continue Our Momentum
Electing Democrats up and down the ballot has never been more critical. Whether it’s the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the gun violence epidemic, Trump’s increasingly disturbing behavior, or countless examples that show how Democratic and Republican Party priorities and values differ, there is so much at stake in 2024.
At such a crucial juncture, please help the Lake County Democrats continue our momentum by joining, renewing your membership for 2024, or just contributing at lakedems.org/contribute. Or send a check to Lake Dems, P.O. Box 671, Lake Zurich, IL 60047. |

New Illinois Laws Take Effect January 1, 2024
Democrats are working hard to pass laws that impact the lives of everyday Americans. A number of great new laws took effect January 1 in Illinois, ranging from not allowing the banning of books to the regulation of “deep fake porn” and prohibitions on videoconferencing while driving. We highlight a few of them here:
- As upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, Illinoisans who own guns, ammunition, and accessories prohibited under the state’s “assault weapons” ban will violate the law if they don’t register them with the state.
- The Minimum Wage Law increases the state minimum wage to $14 per hour. In 2025, it will rise to $15 per hour.
- The Paid Leave for All Workers Act requires employers to give all workers – even hourly employees – the ability to earn up to 40 hours of paid leave during a 12-month period.
- The passage of House Bill 2789 ensures that libraries in Illinois will lose access to grants administered by the Secretary of State’s office if they ban books or other material.
- The Digital Forgeries Act allows people who are falsely depicted in sexually explicit images or videos to sue the creator of that material.
- The VEH CD-Video Conferencing Law makes it illegal for Illinois drivers to participate in videoconferencing or to check their social media pages while behind the wheel.
