51st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Decision
January 22 marked the 51st anniversary of the landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, protecting the constitutional right to reproductive healthcare. But in 2022, Donald Trump’s hand-picked right-wing Supreme Court justices ignored five decades of precedent and overturned Roe, severely limiting reproductive rights.
We’ve all seen the real-world effects on people’s health and lives. In some states, women and girls have already been forced to choose between carrying out medically risky pregnancies, or fleeing their home states for the care they need. And the impact goes beyond the pregnant person – partners, family members, and friends all suffer from this lack of access to medical care. The medical community and society are at risk.
Trump now brags about “killing” Roe and says he will “lead the way” in passing a national ban. Reproductive freedom is on the ballot this year, and a vote for anyone but Joe Biden is a vote for a national abortion ban.
In the wake of the radical decision overturning Roe, Illinois has continued to be a leader in protecting and expanding reproductive rights. We must continue to elect Democrats to defend freedom, autonomy, and access to abortion from threats at every level of government.
January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month
In 2010, by presidential proclamation, President Obama declared January National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, an observance designed to educate the public about human trafficking and the role it can play in preventing and responding to human trafficking. In 2021, President Biden signed an updated National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, outlining his administration’s efforts to prevent trafficking, prosecute perpetrators, and protect survivors.
On Feb. 9, 2022, Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart announced the Lake County Human Trafficking Task Force, which is dedicated to curbing sex and labor trafficking in Lake County. This task force, directed by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, is a collaboration between prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and victim service providers. Just this past December, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that a recent human trafficking sting operation resulted in the arrest of 12 men.
Democrats remain committed to putting an end to the trafficking of humans for forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trafficking in our country, our state, and our county.

Surge in Consumer Confidence – Biden’s Economic Policies are Working!
On Friday, the University of Michigan released its monthly Consumer Sentiment Index. January’s number was 78.8, a rise of 13% since December. The University of Michigan has been releasing the results of this monthly survey since 1952. It was designed in the 1940s and has only been altered slightly in the years since for accuracy.
Not only is this number a significant rise in the level of confidence of the American public, it also beats expectations. The average of the economists polled expected the reading to come in at 70.0. According to Reuters, 78.8 is not just 7 points shy of the historical average, it has rebounded 60% from the historic lows in the summer of 2022.
There is a slight correlation between the cyclical highs of consumer sentiment and the presidential election prospects of the party in power. If the number is high, the incumbent tends to win; when sentiment is low, Americans tend to change parties.
Biden has been working relentlessly to improve the economy, and legislation he has pushed through – like the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS Act, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – has been successful. And now the average American is noticing. Feel free to brag about how much better off you are under President Biden.
