Celebrating Juneteenth
Abdullah Shabazz expressed his feelings of Juneteenth past and present.
Many community leaders attended the Juneteenth Prayer Breakfast in Waukegan on Monday. They included George Bridges, Jr., Lauren Beth Gash, Yashin Inchworm Phillips, Congressman Brad Schneider, Sheriff John Idleburg, and Dr. Daisy Brooks (seated).
Lake Dems were out enjoying the beautiful weekend weather, celebrating Juneteenth events in communities across Lake County.
Do you know the history of Juneteenth? Henry Louis Gates Jr., the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University provides his insights into the Juneteenth origins. Read more here.

Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza delivers a rousing message about the importance of electing Democrats, and explained how she resolved the financial crisis that Illinois faced under Republican Governor Bruce Rauner when she took office six years ago.
National political analyst Pete Giangreco shares his analysis of the upcoming election and how Democrats can step up to defend democracy.
A packed house at the Hyatt Regency Deerfield greeted Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza and political analyst Pete Giangreco as they spoke during the Lake Dems “Democrats Defending Democracy” reception. Giangreco urged Democrats to get out and work hard because the party in power doesn’t have to lose seats in an off year, though that is the general history of midterm elections. Mendoza gave an inside look at how she turned the worst fiscal crisis Illinois has ever faced into a smooth running operation where instead of $17 billion in overdue bills, Illinois now pays its bills within two weeks and we have no backlog. We also heard introductions from some 30 Democratic candidates running in the June 28th election. The message of the night was to unite behind whatever Democrat is running in the general election in November.

Volunteer Spotlight
Lake Dems is grateful for our many active volunteers, including the following:
Joy Anes, who lives in Lincolnshire, is one of our more versatile Democratic volunteers. She helps make sure our website Events List is as complete as possible, which is an ongoing task requiring attention to lots of internet sources. But when hands-on assistance is required, Joy can be counted on to step up. Just last week, Joy hauled our banners, clipboards, and table decorations to and from the Hyatt Regency Deerfield last week, helping set up the room for our successful “Democrats Defending Democracy” reception. And she often joins our team at one of our offices, where we attend to the multitude of small tasks that keep our operations going.
