By Steven Gan
This is it, everyone—we’re in the home stretch of a marathon to save our democracy. Every single one of us should ask ourselves, “Have I done enough? Is there still more I can do?”
I know for myself I have made a to-do list that contains the following:
- I’ll get to one of the Lake Dems GOTV events to door knock, phone bank, text bank, or pass out voter guides at polling places.
- I’ll call my relatives and friends again to make sure they have voted early or to remind them where to vote, whether before or on Election Day.
- I’ll continue to do more canvassing, even if I can only get one more person to tell me they will vote for Democrats up and down the ballot.
This will be a very exhausting week, but you know what? I’ll sleep next week when the results come in and Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are our next president and vice president, and all the rest of our Lake County Democratic candidates are elected.
A Load Off My Mind
By Melanie Francisco
What I love most about my country is that I have the right to vote. Every year, I have a chance to change or keep the same the way my government is run. I don’t have to be on board with anyone else’s idea of what is. I am perfectly free to disagree about what is best for me and how I would like my community to be in the future. It is what I fundamentally love most about being an American.
This year, for a lot of reasons, I have been called to be out of state on Election Day. But because I live in such a great state, I made a plan to vote early and I did. It’s a real load off of my mind. My plan to vote included getting a mail-in ballot, filling it out, and dropping it off at one of the local drop boxes, which was on my way to do some of my errands. Easy peasy. No big deal. Except that it IS.
It means that no matter how crazy my life gets, I can sleep soundly knowing that I have exercised my privilege to vote. Many people have worked hard, fought hard, to get and keep this precious right I have. And I am so happy that I had a chance to have my say.
Maybe you have a mail-in ballot sitting on the kitchen table, waiting to be filled out. No worries, you have plenty of time between now and Nov. 5 to fill it out and return it.
Or perhaps you like voting early in person. There are many sites up and running all over Lake County. We are fortunate that voting has been made simple and easy. So make a plan to vote today, if you have not. Your voice matters. Make sure it counts!
