Lake County Fairgoers Visit Lake Dems Booth
For the second year in a row, more than 1,000 people visited the Lake County Dems booth at the Lake County Fair.
Many just stopped to say “Thank you for what you do.” Others, including some Lake County Republicans, acknowledged the great job we have been doing getting Democrats elected at all levels of government.
We gave away hundreds of fans, pencils, campaign buttons, stickers, and bumper stickers, as well as a lot of literature. Especially popular were the Lake Dems tri-fold brochures which Lake Dems provides in both English and Spanish.
Democratic volunteers answered questions and sold t-shirts, hats, buttons, and our new Progress pin at the booth. Last year we learned we had better stock up on t-shirts, but we still ran out or almost ran out of most sizes. Our new Lake Dems hat was very popular and will be available to order online soon! This visibility all over Lake County helps us with our mission to elect Democrats.
Elected officials and candidates mingled with fairgoers hearing what issues matter most to voters. Women’s and LGBTQIA+ rights seemed to be hot topics of conversation, along with the potential indictment of Trump for his actions on January 6.
Among those attending were:
- Congressman Brad Schneider
- Illinois State Senator Mary Edly-Allen
- Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim
- Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart
- Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg
- Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court Erin Cartwright Weinstein
- Lake County Clerk Anthony Vega
- Lake County Board Members Esiah Campos, Mary Ross-Cunningham, Diane Hewitt, and John Wasik
- North Shore Water Reclamation District Trustee Rhoda Pierce
- Candidate for Illinois State Representative District 52 Maria Peterson
Thanks to all our volunteers who helped us prepare, set up the booth, staffed it day and night, and helped us pack up after the fair was over. It takes a lot of hands to reach out to our voters, and our presence at the Lake County Fair is just one way that Lake County Dems engage with the residents of our county.

J.B. Pritzker Speaks About Gun Violence Prevention
On Thursday, July 27, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker spoke with a large audience about state and national efforts to implement laws to curb gun violence, including Illinois’ assault weapons ban. Illinois State Senator Laura Fine introduced Pritzker at the event, which was open to the public and attended by many Lake County Democrats and statewide Democrats.
Pritzker said signing Illinois’ assault weapons ban legislation was the first step in a journey of a thousand steps. When asked what we can do to help prevent the legislation from being overturned, Pritzker urged people to reach out and contribute to or volunteer with violence prevention organizations.
He also said people can help pass a national ban on assault weapons by voting for representation in Congress by supporters of gun safety legislation. In fact, Pritzker and Highland Park Mayor Rotering recently met with President Biden at the White House and discussed gun violence prevention legislation, including a national assault weapons ban.
Finally, Pritzker emphatically stated, “[A]nd make sure that people are appointed to the Supreme Court who are going to do the right thing.”
Governor Pritzker is proud Illinois is leading the charge on gun violence prevention, taking those “first steps” to lead this fight and save lives.

Lake Dems Continue to Talk Politics
Lake County Democrats co-sponsored with Moraine Township Democrats the latest edition of Tenth Dems University’s (TDU) Let’s Talk Politics series last week in Highland Park. TDU Dean Laurie Schiller, a retired Northwestern University adjunct professor, facilitated the meeting and opened the floor to attendees by asking what was on their minds.
This well-attended and engaging Let’s Talk Politics session prompted passionate discussion on topics ranging from local zoning issues to the existential threat to our democracy posed by today’s Republicans. Even though close to 50 people attended, everyone had a chance to have their voice heard.
Watch the Lake Dems Events list and upcoming newsletters for times, dates, and locations of future sessions.

Volunteer Spotlight
Lake Dems is grateful for our many active volunteers. Click here if you’re interested in helping.
A huge shout out to the incredible Lake Dems Connection Canvassing VoteBuilder Project Team who worked tirelessly to cut walk lists for all 431 precincts in all 18 Lake County townships. In less than 10 days, more than 2,200 lists were cut by the following volunteers: Gail Ballengee, Hazel Herzog, Judith Johnson, Tommy Kobler, Marianne Phelan, Mike Pierret, Brian Prigge, Mika Raviv, Linda Stickler, Bryan Thompson, and Ken Tomchik. This effort supports the 2023 Connection Canvassing Project, providing our volunteers (including Township Chairs, Precinct Committeepersons, and Democratic interns) a chance to get to know voters in their precincts and get the momentum going for 2024.
