IL and Lake County Elected Officials Issue Statements on IL Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Assault Weapons Ban
Following the Illinois Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Protect Illinois Communities Act, Illinois elected officials issued the following statements:
Governor JB Pritzker: “I am pleased that the Illinois Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of the Protect Illinois Communities Act. This is a commonsense gun reform law to keep mass-killing machines off of our streets and out of our schools, malls, parks, and places of worship. Illinoisans deserve to feel safe in every corner of our state—whether they are attending a Fourth of July Parade or heading to work—and that’s precisely what the Protect Illinois Communities Act accomplishes. This decision is a win for advocates, survivors, and families alike because it preserves this nation-leading legislation to combat gun violence and save countless lives.”
Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart: “This is great news! Police and prosecutors will continue to have this ban as an important tool in keeping dangerous weapons away from dangerous individuals.”
State Senator Mary Edly-Allen: “Military grade assault weapons are just that—created for the military. These weapons of mass destruction do not belong in our neighborhoods. Thankfully, our Illinois Supreme Court agrees. I am proud that the court has prioritized the safety of Illinoisans and upheld this ban on these dangerous weapons.”
State Representative Bob Morgan: “We have more to do, but this is definitely a step in the right direction that will mean that less families experience the type of trauma that we do. It means more to us because we know the impact. We know how it impacts our families and communities.”
