Democrats Stand Up for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders
|
By Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim Illinois Asian American Caucus Chair
Asian Americans often grapple with a stereotype known as "perpetual foreigner syndrome," which falsely presumes us to be outsiders no matter how many generations our families have been in the country. That's why Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the contributions of Asian Americans in the woven fabric of America.
In the height of the pandemic–when even my children were scared of the rise in Asian hate–I saw the support of Democratic leaders who represent and protect us in Congress, state, and local governments.
Democratic legislators of the Illinois Asian American Caucus sponsored the Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History (TEAACH) Act which ensures that students in every public elementary and high school in Illinois learn about the contributions of Asian Americans to the economic, cultural, social, and political development of the United States.
Our own Democratic Lake County legislators passed the removal of racist HOA Covenant language that reminded us of a time when homeownership was prohibited to Japanese or Chinese people. It is a reminder that Democrats continue to champion an America where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in our nation's story.
Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim is the 2024 Illinois Asian American Caucus Chair and a Lake County Democrats Vice Chair.
Senator Tammy Duckworth: The Asian American Story is Part of our Nation’s Story.

The Economy Continues to Grow |
|
|
On Friday, the much-watched unemployment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics stated the U.S. Economy gained 175,000 jobs. The unemployment rate is now at 3.9%, which makes April the 27th consecutive month the unemployment rate has been under 4%. This is good news. 175,000 is a sustainable rate of growth.
Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee said he views April's 175,000 job gains as "very solid." It's a sign the economy is shifting back toward pre-Covid "conventional times," he said Friday in a Bloomberg TV interview.
"In a previous world, if you said you know you're getting jobs numbers in the 175,000 to 200,000 range, people would be quite happy with that," he said.
According to CNN, two of the key indicators of pre-Covid employment have returned to normal. In March, Black unemployment spiked unexpectedly, but is going back down now. Also, the percentage of women in the workforce has returned to the pre-Covid rate. Women experienced more unemployment during the pandemic because they more often had to provide childcare instead.
The economy has returned to normal. It is growing at a sustainable pace. Wage growth is still happening. Luck doesn’t do this, solid Democratic policies do. Let’s keep up the good work, and re-elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2024! |
